These are the closing remarks of the U.S. Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges.
It is probably one of my favorite things I have read about marriage, and it is a statement I have thought about since I read it at the end of last week. "Two people become something greater than they once were." That is a great way to describe what marriage should be. Something that teaches us that we can be better with someone than we are without them.
That someone has to be strong when we are weak, and have different strengths than we do. Different, but joined together to lift each other up. Two people who are different can create another life. They can bring other humans earth-side after a long wait in heaven. Two people who are the same cannot do this. And yes. I'm talking about gender at this point. "
While I don't think that homosexuals are bad, or don't deserve love, I do think that the purpose of this life is to create more life. To create more love. To create other people to feel this love and share this love with the rest of the world. Without children what is the point of all of it? Why do what we do? Why try to improve?
As a society do we remember all the things that marriage is really supposed to be? Or do we see social media, and tv, and movies, and think that what we are seeing is what it is supposed to be? While those things are romantic, isn't someone choosing to be with you during the really really crappy parts of life the most romantic thing that can happen to a girl?
"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family." The basics, and the big stuff. Sometimes they are the same.
